Can I play Xbox 360 games on my Xbox One?

It's one of the most common questions we get from Xbox One owners or those thinking of investing in the Microsoft's latest console. It’s a valid question – after all, plenty of original Xbox games worked on the Xbox 360, as long as you had an official Xbox 360 Hard Drive.
While the Xbox One initially launched with completely no support for older Xbox 360 titles, Microsoft announced at E3 2015 that we’ll finally be able to play our dusty old games on the Xbox One. Whether you’ve downloaded them from Xbox Live or still have the discs.
The idea of adding backwards compatibility to the Xbox One has floated around before, but this is the first confirmation we’ve seen that it’s coming and it actually works. At a Microsoft press event in April 2014, partner development lead Frank Savage said, "There are, but we’re not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately. It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there’s nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself." (via Kotaku Australia)


 
All Xbox One users are getting backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games this fall, but Xbox One preview members can enjoy a small number of currently backwards compatible games right now. Not a preview member but want to play Mass Effect on your Xbox One? You are in luck.
There is a roundabout way for non-preview members to be able to download backwards compatible Xbox 360 games that they already own. You are just going to need a friend who is in the preview program in order to do it.
First, go to the friends tab on your Xbox One dashboard. Click the "..." at the bottom of the "Popular with Friends" section. This brings up a list of all the games that your friends have been playing. Now you just need to find a friend who is in the Xbox One preview program and has been playing a backwards compatible Xbox 360 game that you own.

Click on the game, like A World of Keflings, for example, and you will be navigated to a hidden Xbox One store page for the game. If you've bought and downloaded the game in the past and it is tied to your account, you should be able to install the game right then and there, no Xbox One preview program required.

Your pickings right now, however, are slim. Currently there are only 18 backwards compatible Xbox 360 games available for use on the Xbox One, but more will be on the way. Microsoft says more than 100 games will be available when the feature rolls out to all users this fall. In the meantime, Microsoft is conducting a survey asking users which games they most want to become backwards compatible. Currently games like Red Dead Redemption, Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 sit at the top of the list.
